Slashing the Guest List

Colin and I were reviewing both of our guest lists this morning. One of the things we wanted to determine was who to invite to the ceremony as our chosen ceremony location has a maximum capacity of 200 people. The dilemna is my family alone already accounted for 200. There are a couple of options that we can consider when sending out invitations: ask people to RSVP for both ceremony and reception, send out invitations to both events in multiple rounds, or invite only 200 people to the ceremony. We're still figuring out what to do.

Save the Date!

Ok, folks. Mark your calendars: August 23, 2008.

Colin and I are still finalizing our guest lists. It's a tough decision, especially for me because my family is enormous (and LOUD...think "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" with thick Trinidadian accents). As such, my list of friends may be relatively short...

Now that the date and venues are more or less finalized, we can take our time to plan the other fun stuff. Stay tuned as more details start to unfold.

Validated

As of yesterday, we were 99.999% at our final decision on venues. We gave ourselves one final chance by honoring an appointment at The Doctor's House in Kleinberg. The site itself was quite nice, tucked away in a quaint corner with a small, but well kept garden. The chapel itself was quite nice, with ample sunlight penetrating into a candle lit, yet air conditioned environment.

For a brief moment, I entertained the possibility of displacing our ceremony venue before I came crashing back to reality. The grounds are booked hourly and it is feasible that we may be rushed off the grounds. There is also no room for the bride to prepare herself in; she would be expected to arrive in time to walk into the chapel. Imagine asking our large family to be 100% on schedule.

Our original selection has been validated. We'll be faxing deposit slips and confirmation forms to our chosen venues now. Once the venues have confirmed our reservations, Denise and I will officially announce our date.

Round#2: DTK vs. CW

Yesterday, Denise and I had an action-packed day looking at venue locations. Our first stop of the day was at Kortright Centre, a potential ceremony location. Kortright is significant because it is one our first date locations. We had went for a hike and to visit the sugar shacks. While it would have been nostalgic to have our ceremony here, the sites were not very good. In fact, one was just behind some pine trees behind the parking lot (not very classy).

Our driving trip was quite eventful; Denise and I got into an argument because the Google Map directions led us onto the 407 (which I refuse to drive on) and we had to find an alternate route on-the-fly. Personality-wise, we are quite different: I like to do things on-the-go, and Denise needs to plan. There were no winners again... we had a very similar disagreement in Richmond as well :)
Can't wait till Denise starts driving me around in Ottawa!

Our next venue was the Metropolitan Hotel; completely uneventful. We have both been there for weddings before so we knew it was quality. We also knew it would be pricey.

As it turns out, our final reception venue appointment was at the Sheraton Hotel; we had later called and canceled an appointment at La Rosa Banquet Hall. Sheraton was nice, moderately priced, but lacked some charm. While the Great York Hall was really stunning, the thought of potentially having an adjacent wedding was less than appealing.

We had finally come to realize and accept that the first two venues that we visited would be our choices.

Now that we have one less decision to make, I am foolishly overcome with glee thinking that the stress will be reduced.

Round #1: DTK vs. MOM

Today, Denise and I went to visit some additional venues for ceremony and reception locations. Here is a recap of the days events. I picked up Denise at the TTC station and we drove to The Gardens for an 11:30am appointment. I had anticipated that it would be further, but it turns out it is on the Mississauga/Brampton border, so we arrived much earlier than Ivan, the caterer. Denise and I had a chance to walk around their small garden and to discuss our first impressions; since it is at the location of the Mandarin headquarters, we had thought the food would be catered by them was a bit disappointed. Later Ivan informed us that this would not be the case. The entrance to the hall itself is quite grand and can be used for a ceremony location. We had a pleasant chat with Ivan and among our current choices, this one would be ranked as 'Just Okay'.

Our next appointment was at 1pm at a location (which will not be mentioned because of demand for it) that was a fair distance from my house; I had invited my parents to come with us and resorted to some 'good' driving to arrive on time. Denise was really pleased with the location after having a walk around and would liked to have booked the venue. This is were things got interesting. Going there, we knew that there was a high demand for the venue and that most dates had been booked already. There was one potential date that was available, and in fact was very convenient for out of town guests. However, based on my research for 結婚吉日(auspicious day for marriage), it was considered unlucky. Denise and my mother had a minor disagreement on this. I can understand both sides of this, but given that my parents are mostly non believers of Feng Shui, I would have to side with Denise on this. Before I start choosing sides and ruffling too many feathers, I will try to find an alternative that would be suitable to everyone.

The Perfect Dress?

I wasn't planning on looking for a wedding dress until we actually finalize our wedding date. But I heard about a bridal gown sale in Mississauga that was taking place yesterday only and decided at the last minute to come to Toronto to check this sale out. (As it turned out, nothing at the sale appealed to me.) I asked my mother to come with me and she suggested that we also check out some bridal dress shops on Spadina Avenue (in the Fashion District).

When I walked into the first store, I was a little bit overwhelmed. Lots of different dresses in all sizes were hung on the racks and it was hard to tell whether they were anything I would like. The consultant, who assisted me, explained that I should try dresses on so that I could see. So, I started pulling a few dresses that didn't look half-bad off the racks. Based on my early selections, the consultant got a sense of "my style' and offered a couple of suggestions instead. As it happened, the first dress she picked for me was exactly what I had in mind! Other wedding dress shoppers stopped what they were doing and were "wowed" by the beautiful dress that I was wearing. I tried on other dresses; a few of them were nice but nothing compares to my "perfect dress". Unfortunately, of course, this dress is a little outside of the maximum amount I had set for myself.

I know I need to be practical about this. But it's hard not to get swept up in the moment. Sigh.

Venue Frenzy

Our next task is determine a date for our wedding. We have some dates in mind, and will need to cross-reference them with a chinese almanac to satisfy my curiosity (pronounced: pâr'ənt, pār'-s). Anyway, the key factor in determining our date will be the availability of a reception venue that we might like. I will have to do a lot of the legwork in calling places up, booking appointments and potentially visiting potential venues on my own because Denise lives in Ottawa. Does anyone recommend any venues that they have been to as a guest or bride/groom? I'm all ears. Did you plan your date first then choose a venue? or decided on a venue then a date? Chicken or the Egg?

Where do we begin with wedding plans?

It's been over a week now and I think I've gotten over the initial shock of my engagement to Colin. So, I guess the next step is to start our wedding plans. But where do we begin? Fortunately, a number of our friends have gotten married recently. And already, they are sharing tidbits of advice about planning for the big day. It's been very helpful so far. (Keep the advice coming!!)

As luck would have it, the Ottawa Wedding Show took place this past weekend - another good starting point for ideas. When I checked in, I was given a sticker to wear that read "Bride to be". As Colin said, this was just an easy way for vendors to recognize who to target. My friend, Erin was kind enough to join me, which was great. She had a good eye for recognizing freebies and draws to enter for prizes. Of course, I had to give out contact information. I guess I can expect a number of telephone calls over the next few weeks. Most of the suppliers and vendors catered to the Ottawa and Montreal markets. So, I wasn't seriously considering any of them (We are planning for a Toronto wedding). The show was good because it got me to start thinking about things I might want to do for my wedding. Colin and I do plan on going to a bridal show in Toronto later this month.

The Story

About Us

Denise was born and raised in Toronto. She is the eldest of five children and proud to be a member of a large Chinese -Trinidadian family. When she graduated from high school, Denise moved to Kingston in order to complete an undergraduate degree in sociology at Queen's University. After four years of living in a small town, she missed the big city life and moved back to Toronto, where she pursued a master's degree in sociology at York University. As she was finishing her thesis, Denise obtained a job with the federal government and moved to Ottawa.

Colin was born in Toronto but raised in Mississauga. He is the second of four children. He went to the University of Toronto and completed a degree in computer engineering. As it turned out, one of his classmates was Erich, a cousin of Denise's on the Lee-Kwen side of the family. (But Erich did not introduce the two of them together.) As it also turned out, Colin worked with Reg, another one of Denise's cousins, after graduating from university. (But Reg also did not introduce the two of them together!) Colin works for a telecommunications software company in downtown Toronto and currently lives in Mississauga.

How We Met

Denise and Colin met on a double blind date in 2003. He was trying to fix his friend, Minora up with a co-worker. Minora brought Denise along to introduce her to Colin. The four of them had dinner. After that day, Colin and Denise kept in touch by email and agreed to meet again soon for drinks.
It was another month before they met again. They went on a couple of dates and soon after, they were dating. Living situations and careers made the journey interesting, but finally, we are here!

The Proposal

A short while before our trip to Alaska, Denise and I had strolled into Birks for some casual browsing. Little did she know that I had already began putting deposits on various loose diamonds and started to think about a custom setting. Anyway, I became fixed on this beautiful (read: butt ugly) ring for the high price of $975 (no zeroes are missing here, hehe). For a while, '975' became our inside joke of what I would buy for her one day.

Fast forward to August 29, 2007: Our northbound Alaskan cruise had come to an end in Whittier, and we drove to Denali National Park for some casual hiking the next day. When we arrived at the park and visited the Visitor Center to ask the Rangers for suggested hiking routes, we became tentative, as there are not marked trails at our intended destination within the park (Fish Creek). In the back of my mind, I became worried that I would not be able to find a scenic and private area to propose at and would have to stick to marked trails adjacent to the Visitor Center.

Well, the day was upon us now, and we had a light but healthy breakfast of bananas, VitaSoy and were off to the Wilderness Access Center to wait for our bus that would take us to the interior. Up to this point we were still discussing about possible alternative destinations to go hiking at. I was nervous. As luck would have it, we were fortunate to have a very passionate bus driver who was knowledgeable about the park, providing us with excellent commentary about the wildlife and hiking ideas. The next few hours on the bus was filled with pleasant distractions of moose, caribou and bear sightings and some infrequent rest stops.

We were close to our destination, Fish Creek, and would be making our final 15minute rest stop at Toklat. Once again, this news made me slightly nervous again, as we would be pulling into an area with little privacy. Up to this point, the terrain did not appeal to me as a proposal location. I guess in the back of my mind, I had always imagined to propose with Mt. McKinley (aka. Denali) as a backdrop; as I found out visibility of its summit was hard to come by, as it is the highest peak in North America and introduced a highly unpredictable weather system of its own. (Aside: our weather experience spanned all the seasons and included heavy thundershowers and hail!).

Our arrival at Fish Creek came with little fanfare; while three quarters of Mt. McKinley was visible, the summit was not visible. Fish Creek was the turnaround point for our bus, and while this area was scenic, Denise and I were not prepared for hiking too deep into the park (no compass).

Denise and I had decided that it was best for us to return to Toklat and begin our hike there. On our return to Toklat, I had time to ask Wendy, our bus driver for scenic hiking locations that were not too difficult and she suggested the braided river beds; the river beds follow closely to the road and would allow us to hitch hike back to the park entrance after our hike. So off we went at approximately 1pm. The next hour or so was almost a complete waste of time, as we were still within visual range of the Toklat rest stop. We had a very tough time finding stepping stones to cross the meandering rivers/streams and finally came upon one that we could not cross. I was starting to get disappointed... would this rocky river bed be the dream location? Certainly didn't seem like it. Again, I was given another chance as Denise had spotted some hikers heading up a mountain directly behind the rest stop. This had to be it.

After taking sometime to hike back to Toklat rest stop, we embarked on our hike up the mountain and I held onto the hope that this would be a suitable location. On our way up, we came across some individual hikers who were on their way down. I had struck up a casual discussion with some of them as to how the view was up there. To my delight, there were dall sheep around the next bend! Invigorated, Denise and I made our way up as quickly and cautiously as we could. At this point, I started scoping locations for proposing with the help of my unknowing assistant. The higher and closer up to the sheep we got I noticed the view was getting worse, so I had a little more time to drum up some courage and wait for the right moment on our descent. Right up to the very end, I kept my little surprise from Denise as I tricked her to pose for another picture using a tripod (so my hands were free, wink, wink). Denise was incredibly surprised. Needless to say, the answer was a "Yes!".

All the way down the mountain I had a glowing sense of accomplishment and there were a few instances where Denise was so shocked about some of the facts that I revealed related to my planning for this moment that she even tripped on the rocky terrain! I really caught her off guard. Good Job, Colin!
